This website is to support Professor Mikyoung Kim’s legal fight against Hiroshima City University for its discrimination against and violations of her human rights and academic freedom. Professor Kim is a Korean woman academic who was a tenured faculty at Hirsohima City University for the past 12 years (October 2005-March 2017).
After many years of academic and power harassment, Hiroshima City University took the extreme measure of incarcerating her for 11 days and dismissed the tenured faculty on the day of her release from the Hiroshima jail on March 17, 2017. Hiroshima City University exerted concerted efforts to eliminate Professor Kim from the campus, the faculty housing and the country of Japan. The university’s dismissal was executed despite the Prosecution’s non-indictment decision which suspected of the university’s foul play against her. Their attempt to deprive Professor Kim of her tenured faculty position, therefore, is illegal.
The university president held a press conference on the day of police house raid and her arrest on March 6, 2017. Hiroshima City University attempted to destroy her reputation as an influential columnist on East Asian affairs, respected scholar of memory and reconciliation, and human rights activist.
Professor Mikyoung Kim filed a lawsuit against Hiroshima City University to recover her previous tenured faculty position on July 28, 2017. The first court hearing was held on October 4, 2017 and the second hearing was on March 6, 2018.
The members of global academic community stand behind Professor Mikyoung Kim and her legal battle. As of December 2017, her support group has about 120 members from all over the world. And the number keeps on growing to 170 signees as of April, 2018. We thank the camaraderie and collective movement to protect and preserve the fundamental values that the global academic community holds dear. Professor Mikyoung Kim’s legal fight is a very important struggle for the conscious world citizens and global academic community in this day and age where the dangerous nationalism and chauvinistic populism is running amok. This collective effort to support Professor Mikyoung Kim is a way to bring a sense of normalcy to our intellectual tradition. The support group will continue to share and update the news and information on Professor Mikyoung Kim’s court case.
